Ok... How should I do this... I think I will roughly frame them as problems and questions. You guys will figure it out :)
*note* the functions I use are subject to change every semester with new classes.
After seeing their own levels change, and Ninja Points obtained, this question was already at the tip of their tongue (some students actually asked me this daily).
Ok then, the hints are coming now in the form of a chart:
Ok, so with that, students were able to figure out several properties on how the points relate to the levels. We talked a lot about functions vs relations, properties between independent and dependent variables, floor functions...etc.
Each student also had a unique title, and a rank. An example looks like this:
How do the ranks work?
What are some of the ranks? I used the following potential titles: Ninja Apprentice, Ninja Assassin, Elite Ninja, Stealth Ninja, Ninja Warlord, Master Ninja, Dragon Ninja...etc.
Here are some of the Ninja Pictures that I used:

There was also several evolutions to the physical board itself (that I meant to post about a long time ago... gah...). It began as just a chart paper, title, and the ninjas were taped on. I then changed it and bought one of those clear plastic envelopes -- taped it shut, and then taped it onto the chart paper. It then became individual place holders for the new ninja upgrades. It took me approximately 3 hours to make this addition, but made my life of putting up the ninja upgrades much much much easier. I had some pictures of the materials and the process... but I seem to have lost it since I took it. I had some leftover plastic envelopes that I cut up, but it's at school. I might do a follow-up post on this after.
So a question: How long do you think it took me to do the Ninja Board so far? What additional information would you need?
There were also tasks that students can submit to increase their Ninja Points. These were posted throughout the year. Here are two examples that yield a lot of Ninja Points:
Potentials for future changes:
- a new board? something that takes less time? Currently the Ninja Board takes me a lot of time to prepare, organize, and put up. Maybe it can be on my website only? but then again, that might not have the same effect.
- more pictures and new set up for ranks?
- other methods of obtaining points?

I love your posts in general! I first started reading math teacher blogs this year out of a necessity to build a PLN for myself. I'm a first year teacher in Iowa and I found out I was in way over my head. Fortunately, I found Dan Meyer and had a really supportive mentor to help me out. My kids have been pretty good with my trial and error approach :-) Things are going great now and I've been finding it extremely helpful following you guys on Twitter, Global Math Dept. meetings, blog posts, etc.
ReplyDeleteIts funny, I had the same reaction to reading your post about the Ninja board as I later saw your reaction on Jeff B's blog! I've only been implementing the ninja board for 3 days and its causing quite the stir at the school! Kids are writing about ninjas in papers for classes or making ninja jokes in the hallways. Its awesome! I hope their enthusiasm keeps growing! I took a picture of what I have for my ninja board so far but I'm not sure how to share that with you. I'll try to post it on twitter. I have quite a few students that follow me so I'm trying to be careful what I saw on there. I have an entire wall of bulletin boards that I haven't been using (other than for my "homework shelter" of no name homework looking for a good home)! I've been doing a slight mixture between yours and Jeff's board right now. I say its a mixture because my ideal goal is to change the classroom climate but I've been giving points for other things like Jeff just to get more ninjas up there and to get the kids excited about what it is! I literally have been printing out the ninja cards each day for updated points or new ninjas. For Monday, I'm going to post my "unlocked achievements" to date.
I love your idea of making it a function relationship! I'm going to have to try that out next year! I don't quite understand what you meant when you were talking about the plastic envelopes, but I love the idea of creating tasks! I was thinking about making calling them "achievements" and maybe rewarding different colored belts or something to that extent. I have't quite decided how I'm going to do that but I have a bunch of giant colored push pins from the last teacher and nothing to really do with them, hence the belt idea. I don't think I'm implementing it the way I'd like to ideally yet but I figured anything that gets kids coming in first thing in the morning to check the board or that gets kids excited to come to class to see if they've increased in level can't be a bad thing! Thank you thank you thank you for the update! Just what I needed to keep it going! Let me know if you ever want to talk ninjas! I'm thinking I may do a pirate board next year just to mix it up!
Matt
Oh yah, kids definitely check it every morning.
ReplyDeleteI'll add another post on monday once I take a picture of the board. That way you can kind of see what I mean by the plastic envelope things... It takes a bit longer to make because of the organization of it all, but I think it looks nicer. I'm glad you like it and am adding it on!
What grades are you teaching? If you need some helps, ideas, or materials, don't hesitate to contact me on twitter! (I'm trying to use twitter more now)
